Digital Storytelling Durham houses a number of higher education curriculum development projects that have sought to explore the affordances of meaningfully embedding digital storytelling into curricula to attend to specific pedagogic and educational motivations and outcomes. Digital stories are 2-3minute videos made with a voiceover, images and sound that tell a story of an experience (Lambert, 2002). The site features digital stories created by students and staff at Durham University and abroad who have participated in Digital Storytelling Workshops on one of the many projects that you can read about on this site. The site provides all involved a place to share their stories and to reflect on what the stories themselves have taught them and the impact this has had on their personal and professional lives. Sometimes, our digital storytellers accompany their stories with a blog post, podcast or other media that gives you more insight into the process of creating a digital story, reflecting on their story post-event.The work ranges across various contexts and disciplinary areas across Durham University and more broadly, within the Higher Education sector.
This work was instigated and led by Dr Teti Dragas (Durham Centre for Academic Development) who is passionate about storytelling and its potential for personal and collective transformation. In 2018, creatively bringing her interdisciplinary background in storytelling (English Studies), pedagogic and reflective practice (Higher Education Teaching and Learning), she was compelled to explore the potential of stories in a deeper way, to see what they could add to current ways of learning in the academy. You can discover more about this work, delve deeper into the case studies of practice, find resources and links, and contact information for next steps and how to get involved should you wish to.
What’s all this about digital stories? Well one way to find out is to watch some and read the blog posts that accompany them. These are created and authored by the students and staff who have participated in the projects you can read about on this site. You can start watching here or discover more stories and learn more about the projects which led to them through the menu items on this site.

Laura reflects eloquently and poetically on how objects contain memories that bring us back to our pasts. Her well-crafted story leads us to discover and reflect on our own objects and on the nature of objects as containers of memories and stories: as objects hold our individual histories, museums are holders of our shared histories. In this project, we are required to produce a digital story about an object which is related to my journey to conservation. In my video, I shared about the story of my personal attachment to Tin Hau Temple. The reflection of digital storytelling workshop can be divided into 2 parts, creating a story and visualising […]
Sofia uncovers her experience as an international student, after being diagnosed with C-PTSD (Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and without access to mental health treatment.
Karim moves around in a wheelchair and tells us what it feels to not be able to be completely himself due to the way the space is designed and how it affects his social experiences.
This site is a testament to this vision and the first ever Digital Storytelling workshop at Durham, which began once upon a time in June 2019 and involved, along with Teti, the digitally dexterous Dr Alistair Brown (English Studies) and four wonderfully creative and pioneering English undergraduates, all of whom were to become Durham university’s first ever digital storytellers!
